Many people have different interpretations of how Fong Yee met Arthur, or the other way around. The general consensus is that Badminton is at the middle of it all (for those who don't know, we are badminton fanatics; Arthur just a bit more so than Fong Yee). Here are bits and pieces of the story below...
Grade 10 Badminton Season: Both Fong Yee and Arthur are on their respective high school badminton teams in the Delta district. During one of the badminton games between Delta Secondary (FYC's school) and Burnsview (AL's school), Fong Yee sees Arthur, who at that time was just as tall as she was and had thick rim glasses. Arthur did not notice much except for the badminton games at hand.
Grade 10 Delta District Badminton Tournament: Fong Yee and Arthur both competed at the Delta district badminton tournament - Arthur competed in boys' singles and Fong Yee in girls' doubles. Arthur came out #1 in the singles competition. Fong Yee naturally took notice of him due to his big accomplishment. Arthur did not notice much except for the fact that there were no medals handed out even for coming in first place.
Grade 12 Lower Fraser Valley Badminton Tournament: Fong Yee sees Arthur again at this tournament and remembers him from Grade 10. Arthur and his life-long badminton partner, Gordon, came in #3 at the Lower Fraser Valley badminton tournament. Arthur again, did not notice much, except for the fact that placing third does not get a trophy (in the following Fraser Valley tournament, he and Gordon came in #2 and finally got a trophy... yay!)
SFU First Year, First Week of Class: On the first week of class, Arthur had arrived to an already packed CMPT101 lecture. Even though he had already developed a habit of sitting at the back of the class (and dozing off), he had no choice but to go sit near the front of the lecture hall as there were no seats left. Fong Yee arrives even later than Arthur (they had the same class prior) and also had no choice but to sit at the front. She sits right next to Arthur, and immediately remembers him from high school badminton days. Her first question was "Hey are you Arthur?". Arthur's shock at her knowing his name only allowed him to respond with a slight "uh...... yea...". But due to Fong Yee's friendly nature, he was not too concerned with the possibility of dealing with a stalker at hand.
SFU First Semester: Being in the three out of four classes together, Fong Yee and Arthur started to study and work on their homework together. Arthur often helped Fong Yee with her "technical" problems; and they started to play badminton together. Some things never change; right from the beginning, they had small bickers. But somewhere along the way, they started to like each other...
October 9th, 1999: Fong Yee and Arthur went on their first date to watch the movie American Beauty. From then on, they laughed, cried and traveled a heck of a lot together, all the way up till today...
And that's how Fong Yee & Arthur came to be! For more juicy details you'll have to talk to one of us to get the goods!
